Osteopoikilosis literally means 'spotted bones ', and it can be confused with other serious metastatic conditions, including melorheostosis and osteopathia striata and metastatic diseases. When more than one condition is present, the combination is referred to as Mixed Sclerosing Bone Dystrophy. Some patients also display connective tissue nevi conditions such as Buschke-Ollendorff Syndrome.
Osteopoikilosis is benign, asymptomatic and affects both men and women. It can occur at any age, and can be inherited or spontaneous.
On x-rays it appears as sclerotic circular or ovoid lesions which are symmetrically distributed in a periarticular location. The lesions can increase or decrease in size and number in serial radiographs - or even disappear.
X-Rays and photographs will appear in the coming weeks.
